Search vs Performance Max
Control, reporting, lead quality and budget needs compared, with a simple rule for which to launch first.
Search campaigns show text ads on Google search results for keywords you choose. Performance Max (PMax) runs one budget across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, and lets Google decide where to spend it. They solve different problems, and the right first campaign depends on your business.
Side by side
| Search | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads show | Google search results (and Search Partners if enabled) | All Google channels from one campaign |
| Targeting | Keywords you choose, with match types | Signals, search themes and Google's automation |
| Control | High: keywords, negatives, ads, bids | Lower: assets, signals, exclusions, budget, target |
| Reporting | Full search terms, keyword and ad data | Improving, but less detailed per channel and asset |
| Data needed | Works from day one | Works best with steady, accurate conversion data |
| Typical lead quality for services | High intent | Mixed, unless lead quality is fed back |
| Best for | Local services, lead gen, tight budgets | eCommerce with a product feed, scaling proven accounts |
When Search is the better start
- You are a local service business and people search for what you do.
- You have a small budget and need every click to be someone with a problem today.
- Your conversion tracking is new or not yet proven.
- You want to see exactly which searches you pay for.
When Performance Max makes sense
- You sell products online and have a Merchant Center feed.
- Your account already has steady conversions and tracking you trust.
- You want reach beyond search, such as YouTube and Discover, from one campaign.
- You can send back conversion values or qualified-lead data so it learns what a good customer looks like.
Running both
Many accounts run both. Search covers the high-intent keywords you care most about, and PMax looks for extra conversions elsewhere. Two things keep them working together:
- Brand exclusions in PMax, so it does not take credit for people who were already searching for your business name.
- Exact match keywords in Search for your core terms. When a search matches an exact match keyword in a Search campaign, that keyword is generally preferred over PMax.
Simple rule: lead generation and local services start with Search. eCommerce with a product feed can start with PMax. Add the other once the first is profitable and tracking is proven. If you are unsure, a strategy plan settles it before you spend.
