What break-even ROAS means
Break-even ROAS is the return you need just to cover the ad spend from your profit. It equals 1 divided by your gross margin. With a 40% margin, you need $2.50 of revenue for every $1 of ads, a ROAS of 250%, before the ads make any money.
Max cost per sale
The most you can pay for one sale or job without losing money is your average value times your margin. Use it as the ceiling when you set a Target CPA, and set the actual target lower so there is profit left.
For lead generation
If you sell services, use the average job value and multiply by your close rate to get a maximum cost per lead. A $450 job at 40% margin with a 35% close rate allows up to $63 per lead.
